Whole Grain Yam-Banana Muffins

Today I made Yam Banana Muffins! They turned out really well! I was kinda nervous because frankly it was such a strange combination, but they tasted great! I have to admit, taking photos was the most fun part of it all :)

Makes 12 muffins

100 g all-purpose flour (about 3/4 cup)
100 g whole wheat pastry flour (about 3/4 cup)
100 g brown sugar (about 1/2 cup)
10 g baking powder (about 2 teaspoons)
2 g salt (about 1/2 teaspoon)
2 g ground cinnamon (about 1/2 teaspoon)
1/2 large sweet potato, mashed to equal 125 g (about 1/2 cup)
2 medium bananas, mashed to equal 100 g (about 1/2 cup)
1/2 cup milk
1/4 cup oil
1 large egg, lightly beaten

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Whisk together first 6 ingredients (through ground cinnamon) in a large bowl, making a well in center of mixture.

Combine remaining ingredients until blended. Add to dry ingredients, stirring just until moistened.

Using ice scream scoop, portion batter evenly into lined muffin pans.

Bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes. Remove from pans immediately and let cool on a wire rack.

Life Update

So I guess it's time for a life update eh? For those of you who check my blog regularly I am sorry. I have slightly abandoned it for the summer...and a little before summer aswell. So here is what you missed: During the summer I went to work in the kitchen at Camp Sagitawa. It was super awesome and I met alot of amazing people. I was sad to leave it but I am very excited to start this new season in my life...which I don't believe I mentioned on here either. I am going back to school this fall to start the very long trek to become a dietitian. I'm super excited...but also very nervous. I've never been to college before! My schooling consists of between two- three years of schooling in Terrace and then after that I have to take the remaining 3 years in Vancouver at UBC. I'm really excited to go to UBC! I miss Vancouver so much. So anyways that is my life update. For today I am just going to be lazy and catch up on missed episodes of my favorite tv shows and make sweet potato banana muffins.....strange I know....but I'm very curious about them.

Lately every TV show that I get really into ends up being canceled! I’m not the kind of person to put any energy into promoting certain tv shows…but I have to say that I do NOT want to see this show go! So please, please, please help it stay! lol. Normally I would look at a law based show and think “Lammmmmme…pass” but this one is soooo awesome! Its not like your typical law show. Yes it deals with laws and court and such, but in a really fun new way. The main character is sooo entertaining! And it is not boring at all! So check it out and if you like it, promote it! If you don’t…well at least you checked it out :)

I just finished watching the second Narnia movie. I must admit that I liked it, but not as much as the original. My absolute favorite character (whom coincidentally, is also my favorite actor) WAS NOT IN THE MOVIE! Poor Mr. Tumnus was only in the first one. Now I haven't watched the first one in a loooooooong time...so maybe in the first one it actually says what happened to him. But nontheless, I am very very disappointed.

.....as I was looking for a picture of Mr. Tumnus in google images (only the best image site ever created!) I came across this picture of Lindsay Lohan! ...however you spell her name...

This is the greatest picture since my hands are bananas!...which i guess isn't a picture...ohhh well you get the point....its to late at night for my blog posts to make any sense whatsoever....sooo

Creepy Music Videos

Is it just me or have music videos become incredibly creepy and weird these days? I've gotten into the habit of having Much Music on while I go about my day. I just saw one of Kesha and even though I kinda expect her videos to be weird, this one was super strange! She starts out talking to Unicorn people about how she said something to a bear and thats why shes president...or somthing or other. And it just keeps getting weirder! She makes out with a unicorn, theres a fight in the end in which the unicorns get shot and spew out rainbows....ya, you have to watch it. Another creepy video...tho I have no idea who it was by or what the song was. It was a video and there was a giant chocolate bar on an operating table and everyone was watching and it was all dark and creepy like it was going to die and in the end a little girl came out of the chocolate bar....yes you must also search for that one. Sooooo creepy. What happened to the days when music videos made sense? And don't even get my started on Lady Gagas new one!

4 reasons why my day rocked!

1. I started out my day with my brother showing me some really great spots for photoshoots. I found a place that has a field with long grass, a little piece of river with a rock beach and a sand beach, AND a trail through the woods. Three in one! Jackpot! I can't wait to shoot there!

2. I'm getting a roommate! Normal people would not be this excited but I can't help it! Living on your own gets boring! My friend Alanna arrives in just over a week. I'm in the process of moving all of my stuff out of the room and into my new room. I also really love my new room. I took the small one because I don't really have that much stuff in my room. I'm finding that I love the small room even more than the big one! I like that my bed touches three of the four walls lol. I'm weird like that.

3. I made a photography page on facebook and as of this minute I have 45 "likes" on it! I'm sooo happy! I also tentatively booked 7 photoshoots! SEVEN! Crazy! This was all within 3 days! I feel so great I can't even describe it.

4. One of my bestfriends, Lauren, made me some super awesome photography flyers that I can put in the staff rooms at work. I love them soooo much! She is so talented. If you have no idea who she is I recommend you go look her page right this second! She also designed my Bonsai jewelery cards. I love them!

IKEA Now Organizes Your Desktop! :)

IKEA has created a desktop background with one of their shelves and icons of folders and boxes and such. It also has a really cute garbage can for your Trash! It SOOOOO awesome! I love it. The download is only available in three countries (Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary) ....however if you simply go to IKEA and click on one of these three countries and scroll to the bottomish you will find the download. Its actually pretty easy...no need to learn a new language! I'm off to make more folders!

Good Boy Charlie!

This is where (and what) you would normally find Charlie doing...

So it came as a complete shock to me that my little Charlie Bear caught a mouse!
I was watching TV when I noticed that Charlie and Fiddy were wayyy too entertained in my bedroom/hallway. Which usually means they are doing something they know they aren't supposed to be doing. I looked down the hallway only to see Charlie had something in his mouth. I sighed as I started to wonder what he had chewed up this time. As I walked down the hallway I noticed that it was a mouse...tho I couldn't figure out if it was real or not. Char and Fids have quite a few mouse looking toys. Like this one...

He used to make little squeaky noises but I think someone stepped on him. Nonetheless Charlie still loves him. Every morning I wake up to a bed full of Charlies favorite toys. I hope I NEVER have to wake up to a real mouse. Anyways back to the story. So as I got closer I realized that the mouse was quite a bit smaller than his toys. I didn't panic though. I was completely grossed out but hey, a dead mouse? No problem. So I waited a second for him to drop the mouse. He finally dropped it and I was about to figure out how to dispose of it...when all of a sudden IT MOVED!! This is where I freaked out. He grabbed the mouse and ran into my room. Which was the LAST place I want him to go. I am going to have nightmares of mice in my bed now. So hes packing this mouse around and I'm squealing whilst yelling at him to grab it every time it lets it out of his mouth. I finally realize that I have no idea what I'm doing and I go to get my phone. I call my mom. While she is answering I am squealing at Charlie to grab it. So her advice is to get Charlie and the mouse outside. So after much more screaming and and much more squirming and of course lots of freaking out she tells me to get the broom push them outside. I get off the phone and open ever door in my house. Charlie...being the difficult one who thinks "Why go outside in the cold when its warm in here AND I have a mouse to play with?"...so you see my dilemma? After a long time of chasing the cat (with the broom I might add) I finally call in re-enforcements. I call my brother thinking he might be home. No answer. I end up yelling for him outside my back door. Finally I get ahold of him and he comes over. By this time Charlie has moved to the living room and the mouse is running around my shoes...I am so scared for life. After even more screaming (on my part) Sam trys to get Charlie outside. After failure with that he picks up the mouse with my rug and squishes it and flushes it down the toilet... I don't think I can ever use my toilet again. I can barely walk around my house barefoot without tip toeing. So after all the drama died down I gave Charlie and Fiddy lots of cat treats and told them I was proud of them. Well...mostly Charlie, but Fiddy helped some :) Every time Fiddy came near Charlie would hiss at her lol. He was not in the mood to share. So that is my adventurous night! I'm debating washing my bedding now...

PS. If I wasn't so completely freaked out I would have totally got a picture or video
of my Charlie Bear's first achievement. My mom kept telling me to talk a picture lol but i was just so freaked out!

How to become a typical Terrace guy in 5 easy steps!

For all my friends from Vancouver who are wondering if I am still single...

I reassure you that it is near impossible to find a decent guy here. To those of you who have...well kudos to you! You have now made the pickings even slimmer lol.
After looking at facebook profiles of guys around my age here is what I came up with.
I decided to blur out the faces as this is a small town and I don't want any trouble. Though really....its kinda their own fault for having open profiles.....anywhooo....here is my guide to become a Typical Terrace guy!

STEP #1: In order to appear badass you need to
finger the camera in almost every photo

STEP#2: Make sure you appear to be very gangsta.
Who cares if your white. You have a shirt with roses.
What else do you need?

STEP#3: You must show off your latest catch...
...no matter how small it is

STEP#4- In order to be a Terrace guy, pot must play a huge role in your life.
Why not broadcast it to the world via Facebook?
ALSO...
4:20 must be your favorite holiday and you must write it on everything.
Trees, desks, walls, doors, sides of buildings, your dog, etc.

STEP#5- At least 20% of your profile photos must be of vehicles.
Preferably jacked up trucks covered in dirt.

BONUS STEP: Try combining two of the steps in one!

Like fingering the camera AND being gangsta.
You'll have a girl in no time!

BONUS#2 (because 6 steps just aren't enough):
Make sure your background says alot about you.
Leaving the toilet seat up in your photo is a great way to say
"I'm a rebel"

Gardening- Step 1

As part of my plan to eat local I also plan to make use of this huge yard and grow lots of fresh vegetables and fruits. After my initial excitement I realized that in order to be a smart gardener there are some steps that I must take. So here is your beginners guide to gardening! Taught by yours truly. Of course I'm still learning so bare with me. This shall be an epic adventure!

The first thing that one must know in order to plant a garden is what zone you live in. If you live in Canada you can simply go here. You can also find your gardening zone here under the home and garden section. The zone simply applies to the weather and temperature in the area. Once you find that out (mine is 6B) then you can look for plants that can grow in your zone! I'm off to make a list now! :)

Yesterday I went to pick up my first of many farm fresh eggs :)
I absolutely love that they are coloured! The speckled ones are my favorite.

I have started my English 12 course....and this time I mean that I REALLY have started. Not thought about, planned, made lists, timelines, etc. ACTUALLY STARTED! Yes...most of you who know me really well know that I am notorious for distracting myself with "making deadlines" or "setting up a work space"...or "insert random set up/planning/scheduling/list making excuse here". The course itself it actually quite easy...my first assignment was to write about my favorite fast food. Oddly enough the first module is about healthy eating...there are random inserts of learning that actually relate to English. It makes me wonder how simple the communications course would have been. I guess most of my negligence has to do with the fact that it is sooooo simple its boring. My hope is to finish this module by the end of the week. I think theres 4 modules in total...but I may be wrong. It needs to be finished by April. Today I deactivated my facebook account (don't worry, its just for the day) so that I could focus on my work. Unfortunately I am realizing that there are wayyyy too many interesting websites for me to distract myself with. My lastest one is Kitchenist. She has such yummy food and beautiful pictures! You have got to check it out. Ok the internet is coming unplugged! I have wasted half my day! It's already quarter to 3! Ok off to work!

A couple years ago everyone was obsessing over Bogs (well at least here they were). I thought they were the ugliest shoe ever created. I still kind of think they are ugly. But lately I have realized that runners and fabric boots just don't cut it in the winter and in the rain. I will more than likely go for the cheaper Canadian Tire ones. I do have to say that I love the fact that they both have handles.

This morning I woke up to a house without water. My pipes have froze. Soooo not impressed. However one good thing came from it. I ended up going to my parents house to have a bath and I had forgotten how much I love my moms bathtub. She has an old cast iron clawfooted tub. It is quite possibly the most comfortable bathtub ever. When I finally own a home I am going to invest in one. They are pretty expensive but they are sooooo worth it. I did a bit of googleing and I found that they actually contain the heat better than other bathtubs. They are also pretty near impossible to damage or dent since they are cast iron. I can't wait for the day when I have my very own ♥

First post of the year!

I have been very lazy when it comes to updating my blog lately....and also commenting on others blogs. So here is a quick update on my life. I now posses the most awesome device on the planet....the iphone4! I love it to bits. I almost never use it for the internet or for facebook or twitter, etc.. My main use for my phone (even moreso than actually calling or texting people) is making lists! I have the most awesome app for lists. I can make multiple lists in it! And it looks nice and organized and its pretty colours. LOL. Those who know me know that you can find at least 5 lists scattered around my home at any given time. I have a major addiction to list making. And I'm happy to say that my new phone completely supports my addiction. :)

In other news I got a second job. I'm not ready to publicize it yet as I am still working out the details of it. But I will tell you that it will be a very fun side job and extra money is always good!

My last piece of news is actually a list (big shocker there eh?). Here are two of the things that I plan on doing in 2011.

Make a rustic looking cutting board with feet! Can't be that hard can it?

I am also going to make these shelves for my closet!

To wait or not to wait?

So I was looking online at iphone 4 things and I came across something that said iphone 5! Its just rumors of it...but theres ALOT of them. I have read that it it expected to be released in early 2011....but I've also read that it will be released in summer 2011. I really want an iphone and im on the waiting list for one! ...but now I'm unsure. Should I buy the iphone 4? or should I wait another month and see if they release the iphone 5 in January? I would HATE to get the iphone 4 and then a month later the new ones released. Its also rumored that they have improved the reception alot of other improvements. To wait or not to wait?

Butternut Squash Pizza! YUM!

Today for lunch I used up some of my left over butternut squash (from making ravioli the other day) on a delicious pizza! After I took the pictures I felt it was missing something so I added a little parmigiano reggiano to it and it was heaven! I defiantly want to try it again with feta instead of ricotta. I also cooked it for about half the time as the recipe calls for...but then again my oven is kinda messes up lol.

Ingredients

1 butternut squash (about 2 pounds), peeled
1 small yellow onion, sliced into 1/4-inch-thick rings
3 tablespoons olive oil
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 1-pound package refrigerated pizza dough
1 tablespoon cornmeal
1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves
1/2 cup fresh ricotta

Directions

Heat oven to 400° F.
Cut the squash into 1/2-inch-thick slices, then cut each slice into 1-inch chunks. Place the squash and onion on a baking sheet. Drizzle with the oil, season with the salt and pepper, and toss. Roast until tender, about 20 minutes. Transfer to a plate.
Increase oven temperature to 450° F. Roll the dough out 1/4 inch thick. Clean the baking sheet and sprinkle it with the cornmeal. Place the dough on top. Scatter the squash and onion mixture over the dough, sprinkle with the thyme, and add dollops of the ricotta. Bake until golden, about 25 minutes. Slice into wedges.

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World ✭✭✭✭✩
I actually thought this movie was going to be a disappointment. I'm not into these kinds of movies at all. But I have to say I really enjoyed it! The storyline was good but it was very predictable. What I loved the most was the quirkiness of it. Also I LOVED that they portrayed it like a comic/video game, so when people were killed they didn't just die, they would turn into coins. Also when he did certain things the number a points would show up on the screen. Very creative. Defiantly worth the watch

Easy A ✭✭✭✭✭
This movie is now one of my top favorite movies. The storyline was really good and although it kinda screamed "highschool drama movie" it was very different than most of them out there. If you liked the movie Mean Girls then you will probably like this one too. Emma Stone is so funny. I have to search more movies with her in it....*runs off to google* Ciao!

I say this because I have three ziplocks full of butternut squash ravioli filling in my freezer and I have yet to make the ravioli yet. When i first froze it awhile ago I had a dinner party with a couple of friends. They really enjoyed it. But now I have no motivation to cook. Even as an old lady she is so stinkin cute! If you don't know who she is.....well shame on you. She is the ever so talented actress who sang and danced her way to stardom with Gene Kelly in Singing in the Rain. Debbie Reynolds is amazing!

Finish cleaning my house. I hate cleaning, but someones gotta do it!

The Bad

So I was sitting on the couch watching TV when I start to smell crap. I figure charlie is just "doing his business" in the litter box. Then it becomes worse....I see him walking around with crap hanging out of his butt! Walking like a pregnant lady and DRAGGING HIS BUM ACROSS MY FLOOR! I was not impressed...not impress at all. To top that off he was on my furniture so now i need to wash all my slip covers (which were just washed) and wipe down everything else! AND wash my floor. Now my house smells like crap. *sigh* and I dont even know what rooms he was in...so now i have to go search out crap. Having a kitten can be very unfun. So needless to say i had to give him a bath (lol he HATED it) and I wrapped him in a towel while he pouted and shivered. So now hes at moms with Fang while I clean my entire house. Bad, bad, bad! But on to some good news...

The ~~Good~~... ~~Great~~ AWESOME!
I got a cheque from The Happy Tree Company! I sold 4 earrings and 1 earring and ring set! Im sooo happy! I am also $31.20 richer. So happy. PS. I have started up an Etsy store. I still need to post some things to sell on it but I will let you know when the grand opening is!

Generation Y

A couple weeks ago I attended a workshop for Northern Health called Conflict Resolution. It was soooo awesome! I learnt alot of great skills and so much different useful information. One of the most interesting parts for me was when we were talking about generational differences. I had never even thought about that before. Just comparing the different attributes of the generations gives you a very clearer picture of how and why people respond the way they do. The biggest difference I noticed between generations is that generation Y (my generation) is very much about fun and fairness. Whilst our parents generation and the generations before that are very much about working hard and had adapted the concept "lifes not fair". During this week I am going to do a short series of posts about generation Y. How we are changing the world. For the good, the bad, and the in-between. I am really excited! I find this topic sooo interesting and I'm sure you will all too! To start off my series here is a really fun link :) enjoy!

My trip to Europe wasn't what I expected. Things that I thought would be very different weren't and things that I thought were universal weren't. Here are some of the small things that I didn't except to be different. Although I must say...I LOVE them!!

Shutters! I <3 shutters! These ones open two ways. I saw them everywhere in Italy!

I soooo want one of these! Its a dish drainer in a cupboard above the sink! So when they are drying they drip into the sink. And you can just close the cupboard and voila! Gone! Brilliant? I think yes.

The light switches are soooo cute aren't they?!

Traveling

So being in Europe has definitely opened my eyes to a few things. First off, that I live fairly close to Alaska yet I have never been (other than when I was too young to remember...which doesn't count). Secondly, that traveling is not as scary as I imagined it would be. Last but not least, that alot of the places that I would like to visit are quite close to home (although I would still like to explore some of the places not so close to home also). So here is my updated list of where I want to travel to next:

Welcome Autumn!

So I know your all excited to hear about my trip...however you will have to wait :) I will post about it soon but first there is something that needs to be celebrated! Tomorrow is the first day of autumn! When I was young I hated autumn...and winter. I mostly hated autumn because it meant that we were getting close to winter...which I despised. However, as the years when by I learned to love these seasons. autumn to me is hot chocolate and a warm blanket. Staying in, watching movies. Eating yummy autumn comfort food like scalloped potatoes, turkey dinners, Squash. I loveeeee autumn food! autumn and winter are both very lazy months and the only downside to them is that you can't abandon your life and just spent the next few months enjoying all of the great things that come with autumn. You still have to go to work, school, run errands, shovel snow. But what can I say? C'est la vie! What is your favorite thing about autumn?

Just two more sleeps until I'm in Vancouver! And 5 sleeps till I'm in Europe! I am sooo excited! I'm also kinda stressed out. I like to be uber prepared for everything...however I am having a hard time with my packing. I have noooo idea how much to bring. Hopefully tonight I can skype with Tani and we can figure it out :) In addition to going to Europe, I also bought some new clothes recently. I am completely obsessed with Forever21 now. Well....technically I got them from the fat version Faith21. Lol but whatevs! Their clothes are sooo cute! Here are most of what I got (i couldn't find pictures for all of them)

Summer 2010- Travel to Europe
Fall 2010- Summer 2011- Finish high school
Fall 2011- register for Care Aid program at NWCC
Spring 2012- work at Terraceview as a Care Aid to gain experience
Summer 2012- move to Vancouver and find work as Care Aid
Fall 2012 or Fall 2013- register for photography course (school yet to be decided)

So thats my plan :) What do you think?

The name makes this recipe sound so delicious! I kinda had high expectations of this one...it didn't meet my expectations. But in all fairness It turned out exactly like what it said it was....a baked PB&J sandwich. It's just a peanut butter sandwich with strawberries soaked in syrup on top. Which sounds good, but I dunno...I think I was just expecting something different....lol. Oh well, maybe I will try it again when I know what to expect.

Zucchini Cakes with Chutney

These were so yummy! If you like potato pancakes you will love these! I didn't have any eggs so I substituted it for water. The water and flour was more than enough to hold them together. I also discovered that I'm not a big fan of mango chutney. Although it might just have been the brand I bought. I would really like to learn how to make strawberry chutney like the Hot House makes. That stuff is to dye for!

Note about the Chocolate Zucchini Cake:
In my earlier post for that I said that the zucchini taste was kinda strong. Well I take that back. Granted it was strong. I ended up freezing them and they I would take them out and pop them in the microwave for a bit and they were SOOOOO good! All the chocolate chips inside would melt and it totally overtook the zucchini flavor! I can't wait to make these again!

YUMMY! I really like these. I made them in muffin tins because it meant less dishes in the end. Which turned out perfect by the way, because the recipes makes 12 servings and one tray made 12 muffins. :) The zucchini was a bit strong. I think next time I will add some cinnamon and maybe some other spices to make the zucchini taste more subtle. I must say, I am quite impressed with the recipes so far. I have decided that I need to make some kitchen purchases. I am in desperate need of more measuring cups and spoons and I would really like to get one of those stands that hold your recipe book open. Where do you get those anyways?

Mom's Turkey Breakfast Sausage

Challenge today: Mom's Turkey Breakfast Sausage (from the Flat Belly Diet Cookbook)

Ok this recipe was not a challenge. Throw some spices in a bowl, add some maple syrup, toss in the turkey (I used chicken cuz its cheaper). There really wasn't anything challenging about it. I cooked about two weeks worth and froze them. I plan on having them for breakfasts. They remind me of road trips. My mom always made fried chicken when we went on road trips. I think its the sage that reminds me of them. Anyways these were really yummy and I cant wait for breakfast tomorrow! :)

Rigatoni with Sardinian Sausage Sauce

Yesterday I made the Rigatoni with Sardinian Sausage Sauce.
At first I was very unimpressed with the serving size. It ended up being about half a cup after I portioned it into the 4 servings (the other three are going to get frozen for quick dinners). So I sulked away and ate my portion...adding a tiny bit of parmesan because pasta isnt pasta without a little cheese. It was actually really good and to my surprise I was very satisfied once I was finished. It was the perfect amount! I didn't feel hungry after nor did I feel like I ate too much. So overall, I think this recipe is going to be one that I might try again in the future. I did change a few things in the recipe though. I used Ukrainian sausage because I couldn't find any turkey sausage like the one they described in the book. And I used rotini because it was all I had in my cupboard. One complaint I have about this book is that some of the ingredients arn't sold in Terrace. Even if you just compare stores, the Save On and Safeway here don't carry the same things that they do in the same stores down south. Its kinda frustrating.

Yesterday I made a cake from the Flat Belly Deit Cookbook. I admit that it wasn't the best cake I've ever had. But for a diet chocolate cake it was pretty good. Of course I did change a few ingredients which kinda changed the flavour. For example I was supposed to use canola oil mayo instead of olive oil mayo....but while I was at the store it was all they had and I didn't even clue into the fact that olive oil has quite a distinct taste. But anyways! It turned out pretty well :) Everyone really liked the icing. Its really light and fluffy like marshmallows. AND I took pictures :) so enjoy

Since my first attempt at the Flat Belly Diet failed it is only logical to try it again! I did spend money on the books after all. I'm opting out for the easier recipes in the book...aka...the ones that you can make and freeze and pull out whenever. Because as much as I enjoy cooking, I do not enjoy doing it everyday. On Sunday I plan on cooking up a storm! I have picked a few recipes already and I'm going to pick some more before Sunday. I plan on taking pictures of all my yummy food...but who am I kidding? Sometimes its just too much work to take pictures. So there may or may not be pictures come soon. :) But on the bright side I do have some older shots of random recipes I tried out of the book. They actually turned out really well! (the food...not the pictures...the pictures are kinda sad....but its better than nothing!)

Hello World!

I really thought that going without internet would be a lot harder than it is. Since I gave it up I have been doing a lot more with my time. Last week I made homemade bread, homemade butternut squash ravioli (which was amazing by the way) and I started running and biking again. I've also been getting things done at home that I have been putting off for months. But the best part is! I am saving sooooo much money! :)

This weeks challenge is mango pudding. I've wanted to make it for awhile now but never found time (aka spending way too much time on facebook). I have a huge bag of mangos in my freezer and I want to use them up. For those of you who have never had mango pudding...well shame on you. You are missing out on one of the best desserts ever! I should also clarify that it is an Asian dessert (the creators of another amazing dessert- Bubble Tea!) and although it is called a pudding it does not live up to its name. It is more like a jello. The closest thing I can relate it to would be when people mix cream in jello. I'm not really sure what you call that. Anyways it is my challenge of the week! I will post pictures soon!

Internet no more

After months of dealing the Telus sending me the wrong thing, telling me I can't exchange it, having the device they send me not work properly, having to call yet again to get it to work, then realizing that because of where I live their little internet stick gets the worst signal ever, THEN I get my bill which was almost $300 in over usage fees alone! Finding out that I was going over their limit I then figured out how to monitor my usage, THEN it stopped recording it and I had noooo idea how much I was using. Bill comes again! This time almost $600! The lady on the phone said that they can't transfer my account to an actual internet modem because Telus Internet and Telus Mobility are two different companies (like who knew that?) So the most she could do was switch over my 2 YEAR CONTRACT to a phone. Well bright one, everyone in the country owns a cell phone so it doesn't help me much there. This was back at the beginning of the year she told me this. But alas my 3 year contract with Bell is up in June! Lucky me! So I'm actually quite lucky that I need a new phone and that my contract is almost up. So it pretty much goes without saying that I am going to switch it over to a phone. I'm going to go look at them this week and figure out the plans and such. I'm quite happy to get a new phone, and ever HAPPIER that I am getting rid of this dreaded internet! I miss the days of Shaw where they didn't care how much time I spent on the internet uploading and downloading. I was dreading getting internet in my appartment because I had no idea who to go with and such and then I heard a knock at the door. It was a guy from Shaw! Offering internet! I made a time right then and there for them to come hook it up! It was THAT simple! They never once made me pay more than the 20 something dollars that I was charged in the beginning. Which if I might add Telus charged me $30 a month....without the extra usage fees. Oh Shaw if only you were in Terrace!

This morning I discovered a blog. Not just any blog. My new favorite blog! It is written by a woman named Kay and her blog is all about photography, recipes, and her life in Holland! I love how in almost every post she shares a little bit about life in the Netherlands. Whether it be about their obsession with bikes and cheese to how they celebrate festivals. It is great. Her recipes are usually quite simple and look incredibly delicious! There are a few recipes that I would like to try. I was also super excited to see that all her cooking ingredients were in dutch! (duh) lol. It's also helping me learn dutch! On one of her posts she had a picture of her cutting up the chicken for a recipe and I noticed on the cutting board it said "Kip". I was SUPER excited because I just learned that word this week and it means chicken! I really liked the word because chickens are awkward...as is the word "chicken"...so the word kip just suited them so well. :) Anyways enough talking about it! Go over and take a look! I guarantee your mouth will be watering by the time your done!

I was reading the news paper today (which I rarely do) and I got to my favorite page. The community page! I love to look at all the events that are coming up and dream about participating in some (which I never really make an effort to do). But this month shall be different! I also have the goal on my 101 in 1001 days list to do some volunteer work. So it is time to stop procrastinating. I highlighted a few that interested me and here is my list.

I haven't decided which I am going to actually do. Riverboat days isn't until later in the year. I don't want to make myself too busy. But it would be nice to be involved in something other that work and attempting to finish English 12 (which is a nightmare by the way). Ps. I am sooo happy it is finally spring!

Onward to the second day...

Good Friday! We had hot crossed buns and eggs for breakfast! Yum! While I was serving the little ladies in the back I only gave them one egg each because they don't eat much. As I walked past a certain resident whom when you offer him salad he says "i am not a bunny" lol, he told me that my menu sign was wrong. Knowing it was some bazaar reason (because it always is lol) I humored him and stopped to listen. He told me that I wrote "eggs"(emphasis on the s) but there was only one egg on the plate I was holding. We both laughed and I brought the ladies their ONE egg lol. Then when it came time to serve him I put two eggs on his plate. I brought it up to him and said "look! two eggs!". He said "eggssss!" and laughed soooo loud! The whole dinning room could hear him! It totally made his day.

That was really the only entertaining thing that happened that day. Though by this time I was in such a good mood that almost anything made me smile. Like when one of the residents sat beside the window and buzzed at the hummingbirds. Ya I spent like the whole day laughing and giggling to myself. I could not think of a single serious though to clear my giggles. There are many other great things that happen at work, but I'll save those for another day!

This is why I love my job (Part1)

The previous two days I was working the morning shifts. I haven't done a morning shift in that part of the building in a lonnnng time! I was kinda dreading it...having to be at work at 6am...the second I walk in that door having people chase me in their powered wheelchairs wanting coffee. It was not my favorite shift! However the last two days I was so completely entertained by the residents!

I went out to the dinning room to set the tables when all of a sudden one of the residents whips out his harmonica and starts playing. He was actually quite good. It was so random and I could not stop laughing. I was trying to hide it but I didn't hid it well. I didn't want him to think I was laughing at him. It was even more hilarious because everyone acted like it was completely normal! Then I started thinking about Tamara and how she wanted to learn the harmonica and how entertaining that would be. Then he started playing O Canada. When he played that I almost died of laughter! If you havenever heard O Canada on a harmonica I suggest you do! Its great!

After lunch I was washing the tables and collecting the dirty dishes. The ladies at the back table made up a song for me and sang it while I was cleaning. It was "I am forever washing tables" to the tune of "forever blowing bubbles". It was so cute. Those ladies are awesome!

Later on I noticed one of the residents had a sign on his walker. It said "_____'s Oldsmobile". It was soo cute! I found out later that the healthcare worker that made it was the same one who would always take the hats that we wear in the kitchen (they look like blue showercaps) and put one over his head and one over his beard (from ear to ear) and it made him look like Santa Claus. The residents would laugh hysterically.

That day they had a mad hatters tea party. They were all wearing funny hats. It was so cute. One had an angel halo, one had a policeman hat. One of my favorite residents (who is quite a proud man) was wearing a big tall hat with sparkles and the Canadian flag on it. I couldn't help but laugh at that one. I think he felt ashamed. I cannot help but avoid the things I am supposed to be doing to go giggle at the hats. They look so cute in them!

Today, it was the last day of finals. After sleeping less than three hours in the last two days, I got in the car to go to school. For a second, I thought my steering wheel, the gas pedal, and brake pedal were all missing. That's when I realized I was sitting in the back seat. FML

Today as i was walking back from my friends house, i realized i could see my breath. I spent the whole 5 minute walk pretending i was a dragon, when my boyfriend asked what i was doing. As i began telling him, a weird expression fell over his face. He then shouted, "YOU DO THAT, TOO?" I had a feeling that i chose the right guy. MLIA

Today, I walked around my store with cornmeal on my thumb and greeted every employee I work with by running my thumb across their forehead and whispering "Simba." Everybody laughed, but my favorite part was when someone yelled "RAFIKI, COME TO THE OFFICE!" MLIA.

Loved this movie! The only reason I don't give it a 10 is because the end was kinda slow. But I highly recommend everyone out there watch this movie at some point in their life. Audrey Hepburn does a super creepy dance in the movie and it is not one to miss!

Another great movie! I was caught off guard when I started it. I left this movie to last since it would be hard to watch a movie with subtitles while knitting. But when I started it I noticed that they were speaking in English....and it was in colour. So ya, lol I got the wrong movie! I had seen this movie ages ago when I was quite young. The only part I remembered was a scene near the wall of the city and it was in black and white and in french with subtitles. After I watched it the other day I immediately went to google to try and find another version of it. So anyways, there are two version of this movie. Both are incredibly amazing. Its a play as well...and of course a book. It's defiantly one you need to watch.

Knitting and Movies

Today I went to the library to borrow some movies since I am dirt poor and I'm saving every penny I have for Europe. I have finished Jannies slippers (pictures soon to come) and I am working on knitting something for Rachelle's baby. But the problem is that I can never stay motivated long enough to finish what I'm working on! I always get distracted. The only way I can get some knitting done is if I watch TV. Everything else requires my hands but movies don't so I am free to knit :). Later tonight I will let you know which movies I watched and what I thought of them. So stay tuned :)

OH!!! I completely forgot the most awesome part of my story! When I was at the library the guy behind the counter had the most amazing accent ever! Who knew all the cute guys with accents worked at the library? I think it just became my new favorite hang out spot.

They are sooooo friggen awesome! I want one so bad! Its a tea kettle/tea pot called "One". How it works is you take the little silicone part off the bottom and stick it on your stove. At this point it is completely white. And as the water heats up the designs appear. Once the picture is completely visible you know your water is boiled :). Then you take it off, put it on the silicone hot pad part of it and its now your tea pot :) The silicone bottom has a magnet in it that is heat activated so when the kettle is hot the silicone bottom sticks to it. And the top part has a neat spout. Like when you pour the water in it goes but it has a stopper so that when you pour it doesn't all pour out at once. Its really neat. You should go to the website and look at the diagrams. Its super awesome! I LOVE IT! And I want it! Also when your water cool down the picture disappears. My favorite is the one in the front left with the flowers. Its so pretty! Who needs a man when you have this beaut?! Here is the website! I don't think they are actually selling them yet. I can't find anywhere to buy. I think they are just testing out the idea. If they actually did sell them tho I would SOOOOO buy one!

I have finished my very first attempt at a baby hat!...
which I made without a pattern because I am just that awesome :)

...and now I'm on to a new project! I'm making baby moccasins!

Except that mine...well so far it fits my ankle....lol so I don't know if i added stitches or if it was just that i used a bulky wool....or the size of the needle...well it could be many things...but ya...it's now adult size. Im thinking of altering the pattern to make bigger ones.

PS. I HATE double pointed knitting needles with a passion!

I have decided that I love working with seniors. In the fall I'm going to look into taking the healthcare worker course at the college. I believe its around 9 months and 3 grand. But not totally sure if those are completely accurate. I'm going to go talk to the metis association and see if they will sponsor me because I have nooooo money. I love being an Indian :) lol. Granny Am! (if you read my earlier posts you will know what that means :P)

Really, really good movie! Its an indie movie and its kinda quirky. I randomly saw this picture on a blog and thats why I wanted to see the movie. I LOVE the tattoo! In the movie I realized that its actually just drawn on in pen. But still! If I had the guts to get a tattoo thats one of the things I would get. I would get the Vancouver cityline in tattooed on my arm like that :)...or maybe Paris.

I know I'm a couple days early but I've been thinking about the new year and all the things I hope to accomplish in it. Now I don't want to call them new years resolutions for just the very word screams failure. I have NEVER been able to stick with a new years resolution and I'm sure I'm not the only one. So lets just call it "changes" that I would like to make to my life this year. So here are the my changes:

I would like to spend more time for myself in the morning. I either get up, get ready and walk straight out the door for work or I sleep in until noon. This year I would like to walk up at a decent hour and start off by giving myself time to make a proper breakfast and do something that I love, like read or draw or write. So this year I am going to make more time for mornings.

probably would have been better if we tried this one before the strawberry wine simply because of the sweetness. But for a wine it wasn't bad. Alot sweeter than most wines I've had.

Oh how many thing we could say about it. But then again we are partially bias because of the Deanna Carter song which makes every strawberry wine seem good in our mind. It was really sweet and had a nice flavor. PS if you have never heard the song Strawberry Wine you are missing out. Go listen to it...NOW! And grab a glass of this wine! :)

Travels!

For those of you who don't know. I'm going to Europe in August 2010! Im soooo excited! I am going with two amazingly awesome friends, Tanisha and Shelly. We are going for around 3 weeks! I've got about 1/4 of the money saved up so far! So unlike every other time i say i want to travel and then I am too poor to go, this time I am ACTUALLY going to have enough money to go!! :) Yay! We are planning on going to Paris and Rome and another place in between which we have yet to decide on yet. We're probably going to spend about a week in each and travel around the countries. I cannot wait!!! :D

This year I played santa and filled the stockings and such. I got my mom an mp3 player because she really wanted one. I got my dad two sweaters because he is always cold and I got Sam $10 for Canadian Tire plus random things in his stocking. This is what I got! I got a BCAA membership . Its kinda a tradition, my grandma used to renew my moms every year and my mom renewed my brothers and now that i drive i got one this year! And my mom got me a travel book for italy and she spent $400 on Sams ladder thing so I get $400 to add to my travel savings :) What a great christmas! Time to go eat leftovers! Ciao!

5 facts about my day...

1. My street was sheer ice this morning at 5:30am. I couldn't even steer...I coasted until the stop sign and thought for sure I was going to end up in a ditch.

2. One of the residents on the dementia ward was crawling around on his hands and knees writing things in the floor with his fingers...he reminded me of Jesus writing in the sand.

3. I found out that one of the residents who sometimes talks gibberish isn't actually talking gibberish!...well at least when she says (I can't spell it but this is what it sounds like) "granny am". Which she says alot. I found out today that it means "i am good" in nisga! You learn something new everyday!

4. Since learning to drive standard: Every time I drive my moms automatic home over the old bridge and I get up to the intersection I am ALWAYS in shock when my car doesn't roll when I take my foot off the break.

5. Dill pickles are actually growing on me! I hated them as a child....hated isnt a strong enough word...I despised them! But I realized that they are really good in two forms (not raw of course), wrapped in ham with cream cheese, and in a grilled cheese and cream cheese sandwich.

Yesterday Darci came over with some of her munchkins so we could test out the lighting in my home. We made some really good shortbread cookies! They were white chocolate cranberry shortbread! Next time tho I think I'm gonna use real cranberries instead of dried ones. They were soooo easy to make! The little munchkin elves and Darc also helped me clean my incredibly messy house! My mom came over and her and Alicia put plastic up on my windows to help keep the heat in for winter and we put up a couple more curtains! We set up the tree and decorated it! And last but not least, we did a mini photoshoot! After being super frustrated with the lack of natural light we went to my parents to find out if they have some sort of lamp or somthing we could use. AND! :) We found stage lights! They are brilliant. They are a bit too bright so I need to get some sort of covers to put over them. I think i might just make a giant diffuser with some white fabric or a sheet and some sort of frame. That way the light will blend together nicely. We were using cloth just over the cover....but ya thats kinda a fire risk. So on to plan B! Anyways here are some of our photos from last night!

Another inocent victim....

of CPI CORP! They are the devil. They own walmart and sears portrait studios. A girl I know just got pictures done there and I saw them on facebook. They were AWFUL! Legs are cut off, the bottom of boots are showing, the cropping is horrible! And they are a digital studio now so there is noooo excuse! After working for that company I can say that those are NOT good photos. And for god's sake they TRAIN YOU! There should be none of this happening. But when you only get paid $9 an hour its understandable the amount of effort you feel obligated to use. So for any of you who are thinking of getting photos done at Walmart, STOP! Come to me first :) My friend paid $200 for a cd....a CD! Whats the cost of a cd? Like less that $1? That is ridiculous especially considering the quality. I am saving up money as I am going on a trip to Italy in August so try me first! (i need the money) and if you are completely unsatisfied consider them free. Here are my rates:

Today while I was enjoying my lunch in the breakroom I got a call from "Private Caller". I answered with my mouth full, thinking it was my mom, because who else would call me from a private line? I was already at work so it couldn't be work calling. It turned out to be the library. The lady told me that the book that I put on hold was available. I was dumbstruck. I didn't remember putting a book on hold. I asked her what book it was and it turned out to be Dreaming in Hindi! I wanted to read this since summer but the library didn't have it because it's quite new. I put in a request and I guess they decided to buy it! I'm so excited! I can't wait to read it! I have been wanting a much needed break from Jodi Picoult books. I love her books but I'm in the mood for something different. Tomorrow after work I'm gunna go pick it up!

Today I had a photoshoot with Christine. She is fricken gorgeous! Which made it insanely easy to get awesome shots. It was a TON of fun. :) Looking at the pictures I got, I wonder...(without being conceited of course) if anyone would be willing to pay me for photos. I am so scared to do it for pay. What if I mess up and get NOTHING good and then they spent money on crappy photos? What if there is no one out there who even thinks I'm worth it? What do you think?

October Update

Wow...it has been FOREVER since I have posted. I really need to get internet at my place! So an update on my life. I have been working TONS! If I haven't mentioned it before, I am working at the Old Folks home. Its really fun up there. I work in the kitchen. I'm kinda like a glorified waitress. Really good paying job. It shouldn't be long before I have enough money to travel! I have resumed studying with Tams lately. I did the pumphouse trail today! ...well half of it anyways. I heard noises half way up and being by my self as I was I did not want to encounter a bear....especially since I didn't have my camera on me :P. So I turned around after half way. Tomorrow I'm going to attempt to make it all the way...or I might even just try a different trail tomorrow. We shall seeee. Anyways I'm going home to make london fogs, clean and do some studying.

PS. My birthday is in about a week! It's on the 13th. I have the 11th, 12th, and 17th, 18th off. So what should I do? I'm thinking either...

Today I went to Ihop with Karen, Mia, and Laura. It was super yummy. It was so great to see them again! I missed them soo much! Afterwards Laura and I went to Metrotown and did some shopping. Later today I'm going o Saffrons (my favorite Indian restaurant! Wayyyyy better than the Hot House). I'm excited!

I <3 Shopping. This is what I got today:

I have wanted a clutch for a really really long time.
But everyone that I seen looked like some sort of purse for prom.
I found this one and I LOVE it. I got it at Le Chateau.
They have alot of purses there. I love this one because it has like a million pockets!

The most comfortable heels I have ever tried on! I love them!
I got them at Aldo.
Aldo always has such nice shoes.

LOL. YES! Even MORE pictures! Whilst Mandy and I were taking pictures we noticed some salmon spawning. They were sooo close to the shore. These are the ones I got! (I really wish I had a filter for my camera that takes the glare off the water...but oh well). Correction, these are the ones I got after some intense editing. :)

I have gotten more into photography lately. For a while I wasn't really interested in it. I stole some friends and made them model for me. I still plan to do some more photos at the old mill with Christine and steal Christy's munchkins for a photoshoot before the weather gets bad. Anyone else want to model for me?? :)
